The Dexter Wedge is one of the finest lures available. It casts well and is ideal for Bass, Salmon, Trout and in fact almost any predatory fish.
Gary Bass Mitchell talks about the Dexter Wedge.
As an angler the 'Wedge' has a permanent and prominent place in my tackle box. Why?
Amongst other uses this acts as a long distance lure - there is nothing more frustrating than not being able to cast far enough out to reach the fish. The Dexter wedge can be cast as far as any lure and its still ideal for close-in work. It can be worked on the surface, medium depth and it can also be worked deep. I work in a fast current (favoured by predatory fish) and expect to cast at least 50m to catch fish. This is the only lure to be consistently suitable for the job and catch fish.
I am used to see shoals moving across the surface feeding on whitebait, sprats and mackerel. The wedge is ideal for following such a shoal. Live bait doesn't keep still. There are also red-letter days where the fish are not shoaling. Fish are now hunting as individuals and the trick is to get the lure down to them. The lone predatory fish often will not break their camouflaged or advantaged position. The aim under these circumstances is to get your lure into their strike range. Again on days like these I can rely on the wedge to work deep around the rocks for a hit, despite the current.
Solitary hunters can be fished by invading and annoying these predator fish whilst imitating their natural prey could provoking a strike or a hit. The wedge works in this context because it can be worked at all speeds - it can be used to provoke an attack.
Experienced Anglers Take Note
What speed - For fishing a shoal that has been lucky enough to push its prey to the surface the wedge will work skipping across the surface - other lures lack in slow speed.
For trolling - available information suggests that it is preferable to regulate the movement of the treble hook. Either dampen it or speed it up - whatever catches most fish. This can be achieved through adding an extra split ring (as per the h/d stainless steel ring provided by Dexter as standard) or alternatively try whipping feathers or lurex to the treble hook. Also try switching to a single hook. All of these methods work for certain situations.
British perking! A 4oz wedge on 20lb breaking strain new line can imitate 1lb lures on 30/50lb breaking strain line. Try it for fun - we did and found that it out caught any other lure for cod perking. Why - the action is better, day in day out.
